In essence, this is a story about life growing up in "the scheme" (government housing projects aimed at eliminating Edinburgh's slums), and the rules that come along with that life: edicts like "always back up your mates" and "never grass on anyone". While I get why it has to be this way, the fact is it just made it a lot harder for me to pick up knowing how much effort it would take to plow through and how much I would miss as a result.
